Chuck Schumer Wants Legal Weed

On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) unveiled draft legislation that would federally decriminalize cannabis. The Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act: The bill not only removes cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act, it would also take regulation of cannabis away from the Drug Enforcement Agency and give it primarily to the Food and Drug Administration. The bill also imposes a federal tax on cannabis products and expunges certain cannabis related convictions. What it means: The bill is a “long-shot,” according to Politico, as a 50-50 Senate and an “unmoved” Biden make passage unlikely. This despite 18 states having embraced complete legalization of cannabis, and 37 allowing medical use.
