New data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows emergency room visits for suspected suicide attempts for girls 12 to 17 years old, was 50.6% higher this past winter than that same period in 2019. For context, among boys of the same age, ER visits for suspected suicide attempts only rose 3.7% over the winter when compared to the same period in 2019. The CDC said the findings suggest “more severe distress among young females than has been identified in previous reports, reinforcing the need for increased attention to, and prevention for, this population.”
