Plant-based Food Sales Outpaced All Other Foods in Grocery Stores Last Year

A new report from the Plant Based Foods Association (PBFA) shows plant-based food retail sales reached $7.4 billion in 2021, growing at a rate three times faster than all other foods in grocery stores.

Report highlights:

The $7.4 billion total retail sales represents a 6.2% increase from 2020, dwarfing the 1.8% increase for all other food categories in grocery stores.

  • Since 2018, plant-based food sales have increased by 54%, according to the PBFA.

Plant-based milk continues to dominate, with the report claiming it’s “now the growth engine for the entire milk category,” as it generated an absolute dollar sales increase of $105 million in 2021, while the overall milk category lost $264 million.

  • Total plant-based milk sales now represent 16% of all milk sales, reaching $2.6 billion in 2021, up 4% since 2020 and 33% since 2018.

  • Plant-based creamers led the growth, seeing a 33% jump in sales.

The data for the report comes from the PBFA, The Good Food Institute (GFI), and SPINS.

Going strong:

The report found 62% of U.S. households now buy plant-based products, up from 61% in 2021.

  • The number of customers purchasing plant-based foods multiple times also grew from 78% in 2020 to 79% in 2021.
