U.S. Renters Owe $20 Billion Nationally
At a time when the billionaire class is booming, new data shows some renters in the U.S. are falling behind. The numbers: Overall, 5.7 million U.S. households are behind on rent payments, owing about $3,400 each. The states with the most renters with debt are Alabama, Louisiana, Florida, Alaska, and Georgia, each with over 20% of its total renters behind on payments. The numbers are better than they seem, however. Nationally, only 14% of all renting households are behind on payments, down from 19% in January, and the lowest since August 2020.
